Math

The Cherokee County Secondary Mathematics curriculum reflects national mathematics goals, Georgia Department of Education’s Performance Standards and Cherokee County’s Student Performance Standards. The study of mathematics in Cherokee County is approached from the fundamental view that mathematics is a dynamic discipline. The mathematics program consists of problem solving, communication, reasoning and making connections. It includes the study of numbers and operations, algebra, functions, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, probability, discrete mathematics, analysis and calculus. Technology and graphing calculators are an integral component of the mathematics program. All students are required to take 4 years of high school mathematics courses.

Math Courses

GSE Algebra 1

This is the first course in a sequence of courses designed to provide students with a rigorous program of study in mathematics. It includes radical, polynomial and rational expressions, basic functions and their graphs, simple equations, complex numbers; quadratic and piecewise functions, sample statistics, and curve fitting.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of 8th Grade Mathematics.

GSE Geometry

This is the second course in a sequence of courses designed to provide students with a rigorous program of study in mathematics. It includes fundamentals of proof, properties of polygons, coordinate geometry, right triangles, and right triangular trigonometry; properties of circles; statistical inference and exponential functions.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of GPS Algebra

GSE Algebra 2

This is the third course in a sequence of courses designed to provide students with a rigorous program of study in mathematics.  It includes exponential and logarithmic functions, matrices, polynomial functions of higher degree, conic sections, and normal distributions.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of GPS Geometry.

GSE Pre-Calculus

This is a course in pre-calculus and statistics, designed to prepare students to enter college at the calculus level.  It includes rational, trigonometric, and inverse trigonometric functions; basic trigonometric identities and the laws of sines and cosines; sequences and series; vectors; the central limit theorem and confidence intervals.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of GPS Advanced Algebra.

Mathematics of Finance

The course concentrates on the mathematics necessary to understand and make informed decisions related to personal finance.  The mathematics in the course will be based on many topics in prior courses; however, the specific applications will extend the student's understand of when and how to use these topics.

Advanced Mathematical Decision Making

This is a course designed to follow the completion of Mathematics III or Accelerated Mathematics II.  The course will give students further experiences with statistical information and summaries, methods of designing and conducting statistical studies, an opportunity to analyze various voting processes, modeling of data, basic financial decisions, and use network models for making informed decisions.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Mathematics III or Accelerated Mathematics II

Accelerated GSE Algebra/Geometry

This is the first in a sequence of mathematics courses designed to prepare students to take AB or BC Advanced Placement Calculus.  It includes radical, polynomial and rational expressions; functions and their graphs; quadratic and radical equations; fundamentals of proof; properties of polygons, circles and spheres; coordinate geometry; sample statistics and curve fitting.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of 8th Grade Mathematics

Advanced Placement Calculus

Follows the College Board syllabus for the Advanced Calculus AB Examination. Includes properties of functions and graphs, limits and continuity, differential calculus, and integral calculus.

Advanced Placement Statistics

Follows the College Board syllabus for the Advanced Placement Statistics Examination. Covers four major themes: exploratory analysis, planning a study, probability, and statistical inference.

Accelerated GSE Geometry/Algebra 2

This is the second in a sequence of mathematics courses designed to prepare students to take AB or BC Advanced Placement Calculus.  It includes right triangle trigonometry; exponential, logarithmic, and higher degree polynomial functions; matrices; linear programming; vertex-edge graphs; conic sections; planes and spheres; population means, standard deviations, and normal distribution.

Prerequisite:  Accelerated GPS Algebra/Geometry or GPS Geometry

Accelerated GSE Pre-Calculus

This is a course in pre-calculus and statistics, designed to prepare students to take AB or BC Advanced Placement Calculus.  It includes rational, circular trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions; basic trigonometric identities and the laws of sines and cosines; sequences and series; polar and parametric equations; vectors; the central limit theorem and confidence intervals.

Prerequisite:  Accelerated GPS Geometry/Advanced Algebra or GPS Advanced Algebra
